- Wind-driven rain gets in horizontally under slates and tiles, not just from above.
- Slate slippage is more common because copper and iron nails corrode faster in salty air (a process called nail sickness), particularly on properties within 5km of the coast.
- Lead flashings fatigue where wind causes constant flexing at chimney abutments and roof valleys.
- Gutters and hoppers overflow during heavy squalls, forcing water back under the eaves.

The 6 Most Common Causes of a Leaking Roof in Galway

- Slipped or missing slates (roughly 38% of Galway leaks). Usually natural Bangor Blue or Spanish slate fixed with nails that have rusted through. One slate goes, then a second, and the felt underneath does the rest of the work until it can't.

That last one matters. Not every "leak" is actually a leak, and a good roofer will tell you if you've got a condensation problem before quoting for work you don't need.
Stop the Leak Tonight: Temporary Fixes

- Contain the water. A basin under the drip, and a small hole pierced in the ceiling bulge with a screwdriver to let trapped water drain into it. That sounds mad, but a slow drain is safer than a collapsing ceiling.
- Move electrics and valuables. Kill the power to that circuit at the fuseboard if water is anywhere near a light fitting or socket.
- Lift the loft hatch. If you can safely get into the attic with a torch, lay a tarp or plastic sheet under the drip point and funnel water into a bucket. Take photos — they help both the roofer and your insurer.
- Do not go on the roof. Especially not in Galway weather. Wet slate at 45 degrees is a hospital trip waiting to happen.
