The short answer: what a compliant Cork batten spec looks like

For a standard pitched slate roof in Cork, the batten specification should read something like this:

  • Grade: IS EN 5534 (or BS 5534) graded and marked, kiln-dried to 22% moisture or less
  • Section: 25mm x 50mm for rafter/truss centres up to 450mm; 25mm x 50mm minimum for 600mm centres (many specifiers step up to 25mm x 50mm Grade A or 38mm x 50mm on exposed sites)
  • Species: European whitewood or redwood, preservative treated to Use Class 2
  • Fixings: 3.35mm x 65mm ring-shank stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanised nails, two per rafter crossing
  • Spacing (gauge): set to the slate — for a 500mm x 250mm natural slate at 100mm headlap, the gauge works out at 200mm centres

Skip any one of these and you're rolling the dice — especially on the west and south Cork coast where wind uplift is genuinely brutal.

Why cheap, non-graded battens fail on exposed Cork roofs

We see the same story on strip-offs in Whitegate, Ballycotton and out around the Old Head peninsula. The slate looks tired, the homeowner assumes it's the slate at fault, and then we lift the first course and find ungraded, sappy, undersized battens that have twisted, split around the nail holes, or crumbled where they've stayed damp under the slate.

Here's what actually goes wrong:

  1. Twist and cup. Ungraded timber with too high a moisture content dries out unevenly after fixing. The batten twists, lifts the tail of the slate, and every gust of Atlantic wind works the fixing loose.
  2. Split ends. Cheap battens with knots larger than half the batten width split when nailed close to the end. That split becomes the failure point in the next storm.
  3. Undersized sections. 22mm x 38mm "roofing lath" still turns up on skips around Cork. It has no place under a slate roof at 600mm truss centres — IS EN 5534 won't allow it.
  4. Wrong fixings. Bright steel nails rust out within 5–8 years in Cork's salt-laden coastal air. The batten is still there; the nail head is gone.
  5. No preservative treatment. Untreated battens under a breathable membrane in a poorly ventilated cold roof will rot from the top down. We've pulled black, spongy battens out of ten-year-old roofs in Carrigaline.

The slate isn't the problem. The timber holding it up is.

Wind uplift: why Cork needs a stiffer spec than inland counties

Ireland is split into wind zones under IS EN 1991-1-4 and the national annex. Most of coastal Cork sits in Zone 4 or Zone 5 — the two highest wind-loading zones in the country. That matters because batten and fixing schedules under IS EN 5534 tighten as the zone gets harsher.

In practice, for exposed Cork sites we specify:

  • Two nails per batten per rafter crossing, not one
  • Ring-shank or annular-ring nails, never smooth shank, at the eaves, verges, ridge and within 900mm of any gable
  • Batten joints staggered so no two joints land on the same rafter within four courses
  • Enhanced perimeter fixing — every slate mechanically fixed with two copper or stainless nails plus a tail rivet or clip in the outer two courses

Compare that to a sheltered site in, say, north Cork city where a standard fixing pattern may be adequate. The homeowner in Ballinhassig doesn't need the same spec as the homeowner in Garrettstown — but far too many roofers use one spec for the whole county.

Correct batten spacing by slate size (Cork gauge table)

Batten spacing — the "gauge" — is set by the slate length, the headlap required for your pitch, and the wind zone. Indicative gauges for common natural slates on a 30° pitch with 100mm headlap:

On pitches below 30°, or on any exposed Cork coastal site, headlap increases to 110mm or 115mm and the gauge tightens accordingly. Getting this wrong by even 10mm across a roof means either exposed nail holes or wasted slate — both expensive.

What a proper Cork re-roof batten job looks like

When we strip and re-cover a roof — the same process we use on every Cork new roof installation — the batten stage runs like this:

  1. Strip slates, old battens and old felt back to the rafters. Inspect every rafter for rot, particularly at the wall plate and around chimney flashings.
  2. Fit a breathable underlay (typically Type LR or HR class) with 150mm horizontal laps and 100mm vertical laps, sagged 10–15mm between rafters for drainage.
  3. Set out the gauge from the eaves up, chalk-line every course, and check the top course lands correctly at the ridge before a single nail goes in.
  4. Fix graded battens with two ring-shank stainless nails per crossing, staggering joints across rafters.
  5. Photograph the full batten layout before slating — this becomes part of the handover pack so the homeowner has proof of what's under the slate.

That last step matters. Ten years on, if a slate slips, you know exactly what's underneath and where. It's a small thing that separates a proper installer from a chancer.

How to check your roofer is using the right battens

Before you sign anything, ask three questions:

  • "Are the battens IS EN 5534 graded and marked?" Graded battens carry a printed stamp along the length showing the grade, the mill and the treatment class. No stamp, no deal.
  • "What section and what fixing schedule for my wind zone?" A competent Cork roofer will name the zone (usually 4 or 5) without hesitation.
  • "Can I see them before they go up?" Any honest roofer will happily leave a bundle on-site for inspection.

If the answer to any of these is vague, walk away. This is exactly the kind of corner-cutting that turns a 60-year slate roof into a 15-year headache. Can I use ungraded battens if the roof is sheltered?

No. IS EN 5534 applies to all pitched slate and tile roofs regardless of exposure. Insurers and NSAI-certified installers will not sign off on ungraded timber. Sheltered doesn't mean safe — Cork weather changes fast.

How long should IS EN 5534 battens last?

Properly graded, treated and fixed with stainless or hot-dipped nails, battens should comfortably outlast a 60-year slate. We've stripped 50-year-old roofs where the original graded battens were still sound. Ungraded, we've seen failure inside 10.

Do I need to replace battens on every re-roof?

Yes, in almost every case. Even if the old battens look okay, the nail holes have been worked loose by decades of wind cycling. Re-using them is a false economy — the labour cost of stripping them out later dwarfs the material cost now.

Are counter-battens needed in Cork?

On warm-roof build-ups and on any roof using a non-breathable underlay, yes — counter-battens create a 25mm minimum drained and ventilated cavity above the underlay. On standard cold-roof breathable membrane build-ups, counter-battens are optional but recommended on exposed coastal sites.

What's the difference between BS 5534 and IS EN 5534?

For practical purposes on a Cork roof, none. IS EN 5534 is the Irish adoption of the same European standard. Timber marked BS 5534 from a UK mill is acceptable provided it meets the equivalent grade, section and treatment.
