Guttering in
Ireland — explained.

Guttering Ireland — The System That Protects Everything Below the Roof

Your gutters are the drainage system for the single largest water-catching surface on your property — the roof. When guttering fails, the damage rarely stays at roof level: overflowing gutters saturate walls, blow render, rot fascia boards and, over enough winters, damage foundations. Recommended Roofing — established roofers in business since 2019 — has installed, repaired and replaced guttering across Cork, Limerick, Galway and Dublin — as a roofing contractor, we treat the gutter, fascia and soffit as part of the roof system, because that's exactly what they are.

Which gutter material should I choose in Ireland?

Most Irish homes come down to three choices. uPVC guttering (plastic guttering) is the workhorse — light, corrosion-proof and the most economical, in half-round, square box-section guttering or decorative ogee guttering profiles. Aluminium guttering — including seamless aluminium, roll-formed on site to the exact length of your roofline with no joints along the run — costs more but removes the joint, and the joint is where nearly every gutter leak starts. Cast iron guttering remains the right answer on Victorian and Georgian properties and within ACAs, and we restore and replace it alongside its modern lookalikes; for select heritage and coastal work we also fit copper and galvanised steel box guttering. We'll tell you plainly which suits your house, your budget and your exposure — not just the dearest option.

Every part of the rainwater system — surveyed, sized and guaranteed

A gutter run is only as good as its parts: the gutter brackets that carry it (fixed at correct centres so the run never sags), the gutter unions and gutter corners that join it, the stop ends that close it, the outlets and hopper heads that feed the downpipes, and the drip-edge flashing that carries water off the felt and into the gutter rather than behind it. We size outlets and downpipes to current rainfall-intensity standards (BS EN 12056), set falls correctly, and — where trees are a problem — fit gutter guards and leaf filters so blockages stop being an annual event. Cork (021 2040925), Limerick (061 788600), Galway (091 622895) and Dublin (01 2657795) — free survey and written quote everywhere we work.

Related roofing services: gutter problems often surface during a roof repair or a professional roof survey; storm-torn gutters are made safe by our 24/7 emergency team; and new rainwater systems are fitted as standard on every complete re-roof and roof restoration.

Gutter Repairs & Re-Sealing
01 Leaks Fixed

Gutter Repairs & Re-Sealing

The majority of gutter call-outs across Cork, Limerick, Galway and Dublin are one of five faults: leaking gutters at joints where the union seal has perished, sagging gutters where brackets have pulled out of tired fascia, cracked gutters and broken sections from ladder damage or frost, rusting or corroded gutters on older steel and cast iron systems, and overflowing gutters where the fall or the outlet was never right to begin with. Every one of these has a proper fix — re-sealing gutter joints and unions with the correct gutter sealant rather than a smear of mastic, re-bracketing to sound timber at correct centres, replacing individual damaged sections, or re-setting the fall so water actually reaches the outlet.

We repair rather than replace wherever repair is honest — a €200 re-seal that lasts is better business for both of us than a €1,500 replacement you didn't need. But we'll also tell you when a system is beyond economic repair: uPVC that has gone brittle and chalky after 25+ years, or cast iron rusted through at the back edge where you can't see it. Either way you get a written assessment with photos before any work starts.

uPVC Gutter Replacement
02 Most Popular

uPVC Gutter Replacement

Full uPVC gutter replacement is the most common rainwater job we do on Irish homes. Modern uPVC systems — we fit Brett Martin and equivalent brand-name profiles, never unbranded imports — are UV-stabilised, colour-fast and effectively corrosion-proof, with manufacturer product warranties of 10–25 years on top of our own 10-year workmanship guarantee. You choose the profile to suit the house: half-round gutters for most properties, deep-flow for large or steep roofs that shed water fast, square box-section for a modern edge, or ogee where a more decorative moulded line suits the period of the house.

Replacement includes everything, not just the gutter lengths: new brackets at correct centres, unions, internal and external gutter corner pieces and angles, stop ends, running outlets sized and positioned to BS EN 12056 rainfall standards, and new downpipes with hopper heads where the design calls for them. We check the drip-edge flashing on every run and replace it where water has been tracking behind the gutter — the hidden fault that rots fascia from the back and is missed on almost every cheap quote.

Seamless Aluminium Guttering
03 No Joints

Seamless Aluminium Guttering

Seamless aluminium guttering is roll-formed on site from coil, to the exact length of each run — a 14-metre roofline gets one 14-metre gutter with no unions along it. Since joints are where gutters leak, removing the joints removes the leak. Powder-coated aluminium is light enough not to stress the fascia, strong enough to take a ladder, and carries a design life of 30+ years in the Irish climate. It's what we recommend for exposed and coastal properties, larger roofs, and any homeowner who wants to fit gutters once and forget about them.

Continuous guttering is a specialist install — the roll-forming machine, the coil stock and the trained crew come as a package — which is why most general builders don't offer it. As roofing contractors we also handle everything the gutter connects to: fascia and soffit condition, drip-edge detail, outlet position and downpipe sizing, so the whole rainwater system is engineered together rather than a gutter simply clipped onto whatever was there.

Cast Iron, Copper & Heritage Rainwater
04 ACA Compliant

Cast Iron, Copper & Heritage Rainwater

Victorian terraces, Georgian townhouses and protected structures across Cork, Limerick and Dublin carry original cast iron guttering — often 100+ years old and, with honest maintenance, good for decades more. We repair, re-seal and re-hang original cast iron, source matching replacement sections in traditional ogee and half-round profiles, and where the local authority or conservation officer requires it, replace like-for-like in new cast iron with hopper heads to match the originals. For select heritage and high-specification work we also install copper guttering, which weathers to a natural patina, and galvanised steel guttering in box profiles on agricultural and industrial buildings.

Where a period look is wanted without period cost, cast-effect aluminium reproduces the profile and colour of traditional iron at a fraction of the weight and price — a route many ACA-adjacent homeowners take. All heritage rainwater work follows the same rules as our heritage roofing: appropriate materials, documented compliance where planning applies, and photographic records on completion.

Gutter Cleaning, Guards & Maintenance
05 Prevention

Gutter Cleaning, Guards & Maintenance

Blocked gutters cause more Irish water damage than storm-torn roofs. Leaves, moss washed off the roof, and ball-and-debris blockages fill the gutter until water sheets over the back edge into the fascia and wall — and a blocked downpipe backs the whole run up in minutes in heavy rain. Our gutter cleaning service is a full flush-out: every run cleared by hand and flushed, every downpipe rodded or flushed until it runs free, outlets and hopper heads cleared, and a photo report of the roofline condition while we're up there — slipped slates, failed pointing and fascia rot get spotted before they become their own call-out.

Where overhanging trees make blockages an annual event, we fit gutter guards and leaf filters — mesh systems that let water through and keep debris out. They don't remove maintenance entirely, but they turn an every-autumn problem into a once-every-few-years check. For rental properties, commercial buildings and anyone who never wants to think about gutters, we offer scheduled maintenance visits on the same basis as our commercial roof-care contracts.

Fascia, Soffit & Full Roofline Replacement
06 Complete Package

Fascia, Soffit & Full Roofline Replacement

The fascia board carries the gutter; the soffit closes and ventilates the eaves. When either goes — usually rot in original timber fascia that has spent decades behind a leaking gutter — the gutters can't be fixed properly until the boards are. Our full roofline package strips the old timber, checks and treats the rafter feet behind it, and fits uPVC fascia and vented soffit that will never need painting, with the new gutter system hung on sound fixings at the correct fall. It's the permanent version of the job, and on most 3-bed semis it's done in two to four days.

Roofline work is also where ventilation gets corrected: blocked or missing eaves ventilation causes condensation and timber decay in the attic, so we fit vented soffit or over-fascia vents to meet current Irish Building Regulations (TGD compliance) as standard. Every roofline job ends the way every roof job ends — site cleaned, debris gone, and a 10-year written workmanship guarantee certificate in your hand alongside the manufacturer warranties on the boards and gutter system.

08 / FAQ

Questions,
answered.

How much does gutter replacement cost in Ireland in 2026?
Full uPVC gutter replacement on a 3-bed semi-detached typically costs €950–€1,900. Seamless aluminium runs €1,900–€3,400, and a complete roofline package (gutters, fascia and soffit) €2,800–€5,500. Repairs and re-seals start around €150. Every job is priced from a free written survey — no obligation.
Should I repair or replace my gutters?
If the system is sound and the fault is local — a leaking union, a sagging bracket, one cracked gutter length — repair is the honest answer and we'll quote it that way. If uPVC has gone brittle after 25+ years, cast iron has rusted through at the back, or the whole run has lost its fall, replacement is cheaper than repairing piece by piece. Our survey states which, in writing, with photos.
What's the difference between uPVC, aluminium and cast iron guttering?
uPVC is the most economical, corrosion-proof and fine for most homes. Seamless aluminium is roll-formed on site with no joints along the run — fewer joints, fewer leaks, 30+ year life. Cast iron suits period and protected properties and can be restored rather than replaced. We also fit copper and galvanised steel for heritage and agricultural work.
Do you fix leaking gutter joints?
Yes — leaking unions and corners are the most common repair we do. The fix is a proper re-seal or a replacement union, not a smear of mastic over the outside. Where brackets have let the run sag out of fall, we re-hang the gutter so water actually reaches the outlet again.
Do you clean gutters and fit gutter guards?
Yes. A full clean includes every run flushed by hand, downpipes rodded until they flow free, and a photo report of your roofline condition. Where trees cause repeat blockages we fit mesh gutter guards and leaf filters, which turn an annual problem into an occasional check.
Can you replace fascia and soffit at the same time as gutters?
Yes — and where the fascia is rotten it's the only right way to do the job, because new gutters can't be fixed to failed timber. The full roofline package strips old boards, treats the rafter feet, fits uPVC fascia and vented soffit, and hangs the new gutter system on sound fixings — typically 2–4 days on a 3-bed semi.
Are you insured and CIRI registered for guttering work?
Yes. The same credentials apply as on all our roofing work: €6.5 million public liability insurance, CIRI registration (verifiable at ciri.ie) and membership of the Construction Industry Federation (CIF). Every installation carries our 10-year written workmanship guarantee on top of manufacturer product warranties of 10–25 years.
Do you handle emergency gutter repairs?
Yes — storm-torn gutters and downpipes dumping water down a wall are genuine emergencies. Call the 24/7 line and we'll make it safe fast: Cork and Limerick within 4 hours, Galway and Dublin within 6. The call-out fee is credited against the permanent repair.
