Is Roof Storm Damage Covered by Home Insurance in Cork?

Usually yes, where the damage is sudden. Slates blown off, a lifted ridge, lead torn from a chimney or a gutter ripped from the fascia are the typical storm claims. Insurance Ireland, the industry body, says household buildings and contents policies cover damage caused by storms. The word "storm" is defined in your own policy, and the definitions differ. Allianz Ireland, for example, describes its storm cover as wind of more than 47 knots (87 km/h). Other insurers word it differently, so your policy schedule is the only place to confirm yours.

Why Cork Roofs Take the Damage

Cork takes Atlantic weather from the south west, and the coast and harbour take the worst of it. In Cobh, Kinsale and Crosshaven, salt air attacks fixings and flashings over the years, so a storm tends to find the weak point that was already there. Inland, many estates in Ballincollig, Douglas, Bishopstown and Carrigaline carry concrete tiles that are now decades old, and older streets around Blackrock, Montenotte and Sunday's Well often have natural slate.

That matters for a claim. An insurer will ask whether the storm caused the damage or whether the roof was already failing. A roof that was in good condition and lost slates in a gale is a storm claim. A roof with rusted nails that gave way is the kind of case an insurer may argue is wear.

“For our Sunday's Well home I needed a last-minute replacement of leaking roof at the rear of a three-storey house. Recommended Roofing provided a prompt, fair estimate and, despite the wet weather, had a scaffold tower in place and the job finished in one day. The installers (David and one colleague) were efficient, courteous, and helpful throughout, and they left the site tidy, removing all waste. Very pleased with the quick response, the team, and the quality of the work. Highly recommended.”Andy Byrne, Sunday's Well, Cork, ★★★★★ on Google

What counts as a storm for my claim?

Your policy defines it. Allianz Ireland, for example, describes storm cover as wind of more than 47 knots (87 km/h), and other insurers word it differently.

Does salt air or coastal weather affect a Cork claim?

It can. An insurer may argue that rusted fixings or corroded flashing are wear. Photographs of the damage and any record of earlier repairs help show the roof was sound before the storm.

Insurers will usually pay for them. Keep the receipts and photograph the work.

Many householders do not need one for a few slates. For a large claim you may want one, and you pay their fee yourself.

What if my insurer refuses the claim?

Ask for the reason in writing. If you disagree, you can complain to the Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman.
